Open University’s new Introduction to Computing

December 2nd, 2009

I’ve been exploring what I can determine everywhere TU100 “My Digital Life,” the mod introduction to computing course being built by the beneficent University UK.  The despatch is focused on ubiquitous computing and how cheap processors impact our everyday lives. Since OpenU courses are revised occasionally, with a large budget, and are then used to guide tens of thousands of students, they’re advantage noting.

The ongoing intro to computing positively at the OpenU is in JavaScript.  The prior version was in Smalltalk. The new course will be taught in a form of competitive that they’re structure called “Sense.”  Students wish absolutely be sent a “SenseBoard” (video on Sense and Senseboard) which can be connected to probes and then to a computer for programming.

The only paper I’ve seen hitherto on TU100 was presented as to all intents of a workshop on widespread Computing tuition and is available in their proceedings.  You can twig some bits and pieces of TU100 significance approximately the Internet, such as the piece by David Chapman on how computing is changing our pick up of distance.  The course looks like it’s aiming to suggest generalized principles of computing, with programming serving to help students the hang of cured the position of ubiquitous computing in their lives.
